I hope the year has kicked off fine for you all and that we, in Saturn Class and Wingrave School get off to a good start of term too!
I’m really excited about our new topic, Fire and Ice and also with covering a number of genres in Literacy to build our creative use of language and up our literacy skills. We will be focussing on use of inverted commas again and also, use of commas. We will work on a deeper level of reading comprehension and continue to discuss author’s choice of words, use of paragraphs and presentational devices as we read and appreciate texts.
We will start our topic exploring Ice (as it’s around us right now and quite appropriate for the season). We will look at adaptation of animals in the Polar Regions, locate and discuss the geography and climate here and move on to explore insulation and temperature in science and maths.
We will delve into the past and look at the famous explorers of the arctic and Antarctic and discuss the importance of investigating and protecting these areas of our world.
New spelling lists are out and Big Talk genres for weekly Friday’s tests and Big Write sessions. Please let me know if you have any doubts or confusions on how to help your child with these.
I will also be handing out some separate spellings that will help your child more specifically with their literacy skills and will offer guidance on handwriting practice using different exercises.
All in all, I am looking forward to getting on with our learning of the new curriculum as well as expanding and relating this learning further and wider making it useful and applied in our everyday lives.
Big Talk ~ Weekly Writing focus (genre)
1. Recount (my Christmas holiday)
2. Story – re-tell a fairy tale story in your own way
3. A newspaper report about the events in a fairy tale
4. A diary of a personal voyage
6. Formal letter
Please note that the spellings for topic, science and maths will be given throughout the term, alongside weekly spellings to compliment required vocabulary from lessons.
For weeks 1 and 2 there are a lot of spellings. Please encourage your child to notice the endings for –ke or – ck for each word and for compound words, help them understand what two words they can spot.
Please help your child talk about their big write and list and write notes/create images to bring into school on FRIDAYS when we have our Big Write time.
